It might not seem like there's much reason to use Blissey over Chansey, as Eviolite allows Chansey to be generally more bulky. However, in 1v1, Chansey can't have Charm and Seismic Toss on the same set, while Blissey can use both together. Chansey has to opt to use the unreliable Psywave if it wants to do damage while having charm. Blissey's niche is its ability to use Charm and Seismic Toss, making it a more reliable Charm wall than Chansey. If you want Charm and the ability to not be passive, you should use Blissey. If not, you should use Chansey. If you're not using Charm and Seismic Toss on Blissey, there's almost no reason to use it. However, Blissey is still a great specially defensive wall with only one weakness.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Charm gives Blissey a better matchup against physical attackers, as Blissey already has a great matchup against special attackers. Physical attackers that don't do enough damage to Blissey before a Z-Charm will find themselves unable to KO Blissey unless they get a critical hit. Seismic Toss is a very consistent attack that is really the whole reason to use Blissey. It will do 100 damage every turn, unlike something like Psywave which isn't very reliable. Blissey appreciates this consistent form of damage, as its Special Attack is low. Softboiled is mandatory for reliable recovery, it helps keep it healthy and allows it to stall opponents out successfully. Finally, there's quite a few options. Counter is good for extremely strong physical moves that Charm can't neutralize, but not strong enough to OHKO Blissey like a Choice Band Garchomp's Outrage. While it seems like it would conflict with Charm, even after using Charm, Blissey still takes enough damage to deal respectable damage with Counter. Protect can help against Z-Move users, but isn't extremely consistent as it requires prediction and is useless in some matchups. Toxic is for stalling, although there aren't many specific matchups where it's useful.

Set Details[edit | edit source]

Farium-Z allows Blissey to boost its defense when using Charm, allowing it to tank more physical hits. Additionally, it prevents Blissey from becoming useless with Trick, as if Blissey is locked into a move after receiving a Choice Item, it will often lose the game. Serene Grace is a useless ability with the current moves, however Blissey doesn't have any better options. This EV spread maximizes Blissey's physical bulk, as its special bulk is already good enough. The Bold nature, again, helps its low Defense.

Usage Tips[edit | edit source]

Against Physical Attackers, which are most Pokemon in 1v1, Blissey should start the match off by using Z-Charm. However, if the attacker is extremely strong and will bring Blissey to 25% or lower, Blissey should Counter, as Z-Charm isn't enough. If you have Protect and anticipate a Z-Move, use Protect to reduce the damage. If you play a Mega Charizard, Charm first, as you can't risk it being Mega Charizard X. You win vs Mega Y anyways. If you have Counter vs Metagross, you should always Counter first, as sometimes if you use Z-Charm, a smartly played Mega Metagross can stay regular and not get its attack lowered by Z-Charm. Send out Blissey if you're predicting either a special attacker or a physical attacker you know you can stop, like Porygon-Z or Mega Metagross.

Team Options[edit | edit source]

Blissey likes having Steel-Type partners, as physical attackers are generally problematic and Tapu Lele is a particularly obnoxious special attacker that's easily stopped by Steel Types. Because of this, Mega Mawile is a good partner, and also helps Blissey out by being able to beat more Physical Attackers with Intimidate. Blissey also has a very questionable matchup vs Tapu Koko, so electric resists like Landorus-T are helpful, and again, the Intimidate helps as Blissey appreciates teammates that can handle physical attackers well. Blissey also likes being with generally bulky physical walls, as they often struggle with special attackers, which Blissey usually doesn't have problems against. Examples of these physical walls would be Mega Slowbro and Kee Berry Mew, which both beat Fighting Types well. A Calm Mind set could be usable with Hyper Voice can boost Blissey's Special Defense to nearly unbreakable levels, while boosting its mediocre Special Attack.

Strategy Comments[edit | edit source]

Other Options[edit | edit source]

Because Blissey has a very wide movepool, it has a lot of other options to run, usually over Counter. Flamethrower is good for beating Aegislash as well as having a decent chance to burn with Serene Grace. Blissey can use Ice Beam to have a better chance against Pokemon 4 times weak to it, but more importantly has a 20% chance to freeze with Serene Grace. Ice Punch, while a meme, can be used because it has more PP, meaning more chances to freeze it. Rest can be used to PP Stall stall Pokemon like Chansey, opposing Blissey and Mega Venusaur. Sing, while inaccurate, induces sleep which can be very helpful if it hits. Thunder Wave can slow down some opponents while making the opposing Pokemon unable to attack in some matchups. Psychic is a good way to beat Mega Gengar, as Seismic Toss is unable to damage it.

Checks and Counters[edit | edit source]

  • Fighting Types: Fighting types such as Mega Loppunny, Sawk and Mega Heracross can do massive damage to Blissey, even if special, while Blissey can only really Seismic Toss against them.
  • Substitute users: The attack lowering part of Z-Charm doesn't go through Substitute, meaning after using Substiute, some Pokemon like Garchomp or Mega Charizard X get free turns to boost their Attack stat.
  • Strong Z-Move users: Assuming Blissey doesn't run Protect, moves like Dragonite's Devastating Drake can either OHKO Blissey or do enough damage to get Blissey to a point where it still can't win. Even some special attackers can win, as Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Magnezone have tools that can break through Blissey, with Calm Mind and Metal Sound respectively.
  • Ghost Types: Mimikyu and Mega Gengar will be able to beat Blissey whose only attack is Seismic Toss, albeit slowly. However, if Blissey is running an attacking move like Flamethrower or Ice Beam, it can have a better matchup vs Swords Dance Mimikyu and Gengar.
