Mega Gardevoir has a massive 165 base Special Attack stat and Pixilate, making its Hyper Beams incredibly powerful. Furthermore, Mega Gardevoir is one of the most reliable Kyurem-B checks available and beats other top-tier Pokemon such as Mega Gyarados and Tapu Lele. It also possesses great utility options such as Will-O-Wisp, Calm Mind and Taunt which allow it to beat Pokemon that it can't brute through such as Donphan. Mega Gardevoir has a crippling weakness to Steel, leaving it completely helpless against Pokemon like Mega Metagross, Magearna and Mega Mawile. It also finds itself at a severe disadvantage against the common Charizard. Mega Gardevoir also has horrible physical bulk, forcing it to invest extremely heavily into its Defense or end up getting OHKOd by attacks like Choice Scarf Kyurem-Bs Iron Head. Its Special Defense, however, is comparatively high and it has a middling speed tier that lets it get the jump on Pokemon like Kyurem-B.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Hyper Beam is a must-have as it hits ridiculously hard when boosted by STAB and Pixilate. It can easily OHKO Kyurem-B, as well as Tapu Lele after boosting with Calm Mind, in addition to a myriad of offensive Pokemon. Will-O-Wisp deals chip damage at the end of the turn and cuts the foe's Attack in half, allowing Mega Gardevoir to take on Pokemon like Donphan and Dragonite by breaking their abilities and surviving anything they can throw back. Hyper Voice is a useful STAB and Pixilate boosted move that goes through Substitute, which the opponent may try to use when predicting a Hyper Beam. Uproar is an alternative to Hyper Voice that prevents sleep and thus puts a stop to Jumpluff, Rest Mega Slowbro and various Yawn users such as Mega Swampert, but prevents you from switching moves. Calm Mind boosts Mega Gardevoir's Special Attack and Special Defense by 1 stage, allowing it to tank hits from Pokemon like Primarina and Meloetta before OHKOing back with Hyper Beam.

Set Details[edit | edit source]

56 HP and 236 Defense EVs allows Mega Gardevoir to tank Choice Scarf Kyurem-B's Iron Head as well as various other physical hits, while 216 Speed EVs with a Timid nature outspeeds Kyurem-B and Landorus-T. Trace allows Gardevoir to copy useful abilities like Intimidate, improving its matchup against Mega Gyarados and Landorus-T. Pixilate transforms Normal type moves into the Fairy type and boosts their power by 1.2 times allowing Mega Gardevoir to access powerful STAB attacks.

Usage Tips[edit | edit source]

When facing Mega Gyarados, Dragonite, Donphan or Golem, be sure to use Will-O-Wisp immediately. Against Primarina, Meloetta or Tapu Fini, use Calm Mind to survive an attack before retaliating with Hyper Beam. When pitted against Pokemon that you can OHKO using Hyper Voice or Uproar, avoid using Hyper Beam so as to avoid missing or being stopped cold by a Substitute. If your opponent has a Donphan or Golem and it appears that your team autoloses to them, then you should generally pick Mega Gardevoir so as to surprise them with Will-O-Wisp.

Team Options[edit | edit source]

Pokemon that can handle Steel types such as Mega Charizard X or Y or Garchomp are a must as Mega Gardevoir cannot handle them in any capacity. If you want Gardevoir to act as a lure, be sure to make it appear as though your team autoloses to Donphan, Golem, Primarina and/or Meloetta. Mega Charizard X and Y also both counter this set, so be sure to have a Charizard check such as Golem, Donphan or Naganadel. Pokemon that appreciate having a Kyurem-B counter like Donphan, Landorus-T and Greninja make for good partners as Mega Gardevoir can provide for them in that manner. Golem in particular can beat most Steel type Pokemon and Mega Charizard X and Y, loses to Donphan and Primarina, and appreciates having a Kyurem-B deterrent.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Hyper Beam is a must-have as it hits ridiculously hard when boosted by STAB and Pixilate. It can easily OHKO Kyurem-B, Zygarde and Tapu Lele, and a myriad of offensive Pokemon. Taunt allows Mega Gardevoir to shut down any form of sustain or status, such as Chansey's Soft-Boiled or Mega Venusaur's Sleep Powder. Psyshock as the Psychic-type STAB 3HKOs Chansey and 2HKOs Mega Venusaur. Will-O-Wisp deals chip damage at the end of the turn and cuts the foe's Attack, allowing Mega Gardevoir to take on Pokemon like Donphan by breaking their abilities and surviving anything they can throw back. Calm Mind boosts Mega Gardevoir's Special Attack and Special Defense by 1 stage, allowing it to tank hits from Pokemon like Primarina and Meloetta before OHKOing back with Hyper Beam.

Set Details[edit | edit source]

236 Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature gives Mega Gardevoir an excellent chance of 3HKOing Chansey with Psyshock and OHKOing pre-Mega Gyarados with Hyper Beam. 216 Speed outspeeds non-Speed boosting natured Kyurem-B as well as Jolly Mega Gyarados. The remaining 56 EVs are put in Defense so as to improve rolls against Golem.

If Gardevoir is carrying Will-O-Wisp and is facing Donphan or Golem, be sure to use it immediately. If Gardevoir is carrying Calm Mind and is facing Primarina, Meloetta or Tapu Fini, use it to survive an attack before retaliating with Hyper Beam. When pitted against Pokemon that you can OHKO without Hyper Beam, avoid using it so as to avoid missing or being stopped cold by a Substitute. Use Hyper Beam from the get-go against Pokemon that you can OHKO such as Tapu Lele, and if Gardevoir is not carrying Will-O-Wisp, Gyarados and non-Specially Defensive Dragonite. When facing Mega Venusaur, unless you suspect that they have Sleep Powder, use Psyshock to 2HKO it. If you believe they will use Sleep Powder, however, use Taunt to prevent being put to sleep, which would otherwise result in a loss. Against Chansey, use Taunt to prevent it from recovering HP, and then 2HKO it with Psyshock. Against Blissey, you should use Psyshock before you use Taunt so that you can get the most damage off before it uses Z-Charm to boost its defense.

Team Options[edit | edit source]

Pokemon that can handle Steel types such as Mega Charizard X or Y or Garchomp are a must as Mega Gardevoir cannot handle them in any capacity. If you want to use Gardevoir as a lure, be sure to make it appear as though your team autloses to Chansey and/or Blissey, and to a lesser extent, Mega Venusaur. Mega Charizard X and Y also both check this set, so be sure to have a Charizard counter such as Donphan or Waterium Tapu Fini. Golem in particular can beat most Steel type Pokemon and Mega Charizard X and Y, loses to Mega Venusaur, Chansey and Blissey, and appreciates having a Kyurem-B deterrent.

Other Options[edit | edit source]

Encore is a somewhat useful move to mess with Pokemon that use status moves, but is generally outclassed by Taunt. Protect can be used in tandem with Hyper Voice or Uproar to check Mega Lopunny and scout for the opponents Z moves, but is generally not worth the moveslot. Thanks to Mega Gardevoir's high Special Defense, a specially bulky variant may be used to check Pokemon such as Porygon-Z and Greninja.

Checks and Counters[edit | edit source]

  • Steel-types: Steel types like Mega Metagross, Magearna, Mega Mawile and Magnezone can hit Mega Gardevoir for super-effective damage with their STAB attacks and resist Fairy and Psychic.
  • Charizard: Mega Charizard Y can OHKO Mega Gardevoir with Blast Burn while Mega Charizard X can choose not to Mega Evolve, thus resisting Fairy, use Dragon Dance, and OHKO on the next turn.
  • Faster Powerful Attackers: Tapu Koko, Mega Pinsir, Mega Lopunny, Choice Scarf Porygon-Z and Naganadel among others can all outspeed and KO Mega Gardevoir before it has a chance to hit back.
  • Mimikyu: Mimikyu's ability allows it to survive any one hit, and it can use its Z moves to KO Mega Gardevoir.
