Mega Mawile is one of the premier Slow and Bulky hard hitters thanks to its typing, moves, and abilities. Mega Mawile effectively utilizes 2 abilities in-battle; Intimidate allows it to reduce physical attackers power by 1 stage while Huge Power doubles Mega Mawile's Attack to the highest unboosted Attack in the game. Intimidate and Mega Mawile's naturally high physical defense makes it great against physically-biased Pokemon, but its low Special Defense makes it susceptible to some strong special Pokémon. It's blessed with a great defensive typing, only weak to Fire and Ground, while also having 9 resistances and 2 immunities. This gives a Mega Mawile an edge against popular Dragon-, Fairy-, and Fighting-type Pokemon. Unfortunately, Fire- and Ground-type Pokemon are very prevalent. Mega Mawile also has a decent movepool including Iron Head, Play Rough, Swords Dance, Sucker Punch and some niche options including Metal Burst, Fire Fang, Thunder Punch, and Taunt. Mega Mawile also is very slow, although that is somewhat mitigated by priority Sucker Punch. In the end however, It faces stiff competition with Magearna, who has a higher Special Defense stat, as a Steel/Fairy bulky attacker.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Iron Head is Mega Mawile's best Steel STAB move and is the most consistent. Play Rough is Mega Mawile's strongest STAB Fairy move, but only has 90% accuracy. Sucker Punch is a very strong priority move that can help pick off faster foes. Swords Dance is useful in breaking walls as their high Defense may make it difficult to break and is also useful to combo with Sucker Punch to break faster Pokemon.

Set Details[edit | edit source]

252 Attack and Adamant Nature provide the most attack possible allowing Mega Mawile to break as many foes as possible. 252 HP gives Mega Mawile a lot of bulk to survive as many hits as possible. 4 Special Defense gives Mega Mawile a small increase in Special Defense. Intimidate as the pre-mega ability allows Mega Mawile to survive as many physical hits as possible.

Usage Tips[edit | edit source]

Mega Mawile should be used against popular Dragon-, Fighting-, and Dark-type Pokemon like Kyurem-B, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Gyarados or notable physical Pokemon like Kartana and Crustle. However, avoid sending out Mega Mawile against Fire- and Ground-types like both Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y and Donphan. In most situations, Mega Mawile will use Play Rough or Iron Head depending on the opponent's typing and then finish them with Sucker Punch. Against walls and Pokemon with Counter like Chansey and Mega Ampharos, Swords Dance should be used to maximize damage instead of 2HKOing. Against Pokemon that carry Taunt such as Mega Gyarados, be hesistant with using Swords Dance as it's likely that they will Taunt you out of it.

Team Options[edit | edit source]

Water-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados and Mega Blastoise are great at taking down Fire-types and Ground-types that threaten Mega Mawile the most. Fire and Ground-type Pokemon like Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Golem are great at beating Steel-type Pokemon and Tapu Koko that resist both of Mega Mawile's STAB moves. Special Walls like Chansey and Blissey can beat pokemon like Porygon-Z and Greninja that could take advantage Mega Mawile's low special Defense. Choice Specs users like Porygon-Z and Greninja with Extrasensory can beat some physical Walls like Mega Slowbro and Mega Venusaur. Tapu Koko, Electric-types like Magnezone, and Grass-type Pokémon like Kartana can beat bulky Water-types that can cause problems for Mega Mawile.

Strategy Comments[edit | edit source]

Other Options[edit | edit source]

Taunt is a great option to surprise Stall Pokemon like Mega Slowbro that might expect Swords Dance in its place. Metal Burst and some bulkier spreads can surprise some Pokemon like Choice Specs Porygon-Z. Fire Fang can be used to beat Steel-types especially Durant and Kartana. A fast spread with 252 speed EVs can be used to outspeed other slow base 50 Pokemon. Hyper Cutter is another option as an ability to allow Mawile to boost its attack while against Charm users like Blissey and Chansey. Endure can be useful against Pokemon that utilize Recharge moves like Mega Charizard Y or Porygon-Z. Thunder Punch helps against certain Water-types like Gyarados or Primarina.

Checks and Counters[edit | edit source]

  • Fire-types: Fire-types like Blaziken and Mega Charizard Y and Blaziken can easily OHKO Mega Mawile with their STAB Fire attack.
  • Ground-types: Ground-types like Golem and Donphan can similarly use Tectonic Rage to easily beat Mega Mawile.
  • Steel-types: Steel-types resist both of of Mega Mawile's STAB options, so Pokemon like Genesect and Mega Aggron can easily beat Mega Mawile.
  • Strong Special Pokemon: Pokemon like Tapu Koko, Porygon-Z, and Greninja can take advantage of Mega Mawile's low Special Defense and can OHKO before Mega Mawile can retaliate.
  • Special Water-types: Special Water-types like Primarina, Tapu Fini, and Mega Blastoise can take advantage of Mega Mawile's low Special Defense with powerful moves like Hydro Cannon or Hydro Pump.
