Mega Tyranitar is a slow, bulky offense-based Pokemon, which is capable of tanking powerful super effective moves from Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Kyurem-B, and Tapu Lele and KOing them back. It has a 164 Base Attack stat, one of the best available for the 1v1 metagame, with access to strong STAB moves in Stone Edge and Crunch, coverage moves like Iron Head, Fire Punch, Superpower, and Earthquake, and utility moves like Dragon Dance and Taunt, which allow it to take on a large number of Pokemon in the 1v1 metagame such as Mega Gyarados, Kyurem-B, Tapu Koko, Mega Charizard X and Y, Dragonite, Genesect, Greninja and Heatran, and defeat them. It has good 100 / 150 / 120 bulk, with a fantastic ability in Sand Stream, raising Mega Tyranitar's Special Defense. With appropriate investment, this lets Mega Tyranitar tank up to 2 Outrages from Kyurem-B, a +1 Waterfall from Mega Gyarados, a Gigavolt Havoc from Tapu Koko, a couple of Moonblast from Tapu Lele, Special Attack Download-boosted Choice Specs Bug Buzz from Genesect, and Choice Specs Hydro Cannon from Greninja, to name a few. Its typing also gives it key resistances to Fire-, Normal-, and Ghost-types like Mega Charzard X and Y, Porygon-Z, and Mega Gengar and gives it an immunity to Psychic-type moves from Pokemon like Latios. However, Rock is a weak defensive typing, and Mega Tyranitar has difficulty getting around stall because it has to give up arguably more valuable coverage in order to do so. Mega Tyranitar is also a slow Pokemon, and this presents major drawbacks in its usage.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Either Rock Tomb or Stone Edge can be used as STAB moves. While Stone Edge hits harder and KOes foes like Kyurem-B and bulky Mega Charizard X, Rock Tomb slows down faster foes like Dragonite and Magnezone, allowing Mega Tyranitar to KO them in the consecutive turns. Also, Rock Tomb is more reliable because of higher accuracy, though Stone Edge has a higher critical hit ratio. Crunch or Fire Punch can be used. Crunch can be used as a STAB move to defeat Psychic- and Ghost-type Pokemon like Meloetta and Mega Gengar, while Fire Punch can be used to hit Steel-type Pokemon like Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela. Earthquake is in this set to KO Electric and some Steel-types like Tapu Koko, Magnezone, and Heatran. Iron Head gives it a better match up against Fairy-type Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Mega Diancie, and it also has a chance of flinching foes, which could help it win against Golem where Mega Tyranitar can cause Golem to flinch on the first turn and proceed to KO Golem with Superpower. Either Low Kick or Superpower can be used according to the Pokemon needed to be KOed by Mega Tyranitar. The aforementioned moves take care of some Normal- and Dark-type Pokemon like Porygon-Z, Mega Gyarados, and opposing Mega Tyranitar. Superpower provides a consistent Base Power but lowers Mega Tyranitar's Defense, while Low Kick varies in Base Power, but doesn't compromise on Defence stat which is necessary for some match-ups like Mega Gyarados.

Set Details[edit | edit source]

248 HP and 64 Defense EVs allows Mega Tyranitar to tank a couple of Outrages from Kyurem-B, and a +1 Waterfall from Adamant maximum Attack Mega Gyarados. The 100 Special Defence EVs investment with Sand Stream as the ability helps it to tank a Special Attack Download-boosted Choice Specs Bug Buzz from Genesect and a Choice Specs Protean-boosted Hydro Cannon from Greninja. The remaining 76 EVs are put into Attack which, when coupled with an Adamant nature, help KO Pokemon like Kyurem-B, Mega Gyarados, Mega Charizard X and Y, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Magnezone, Genesect, and Greninja.

Usage Tips[edit | edit source]

Since Mega Tyranitar is a Rock- and Dark-type Pokemon, it is advisable to send it against Bug-, Fire-, Flying-, Ghost-, Ice-, and Psychic-types like Mega Pinsir, Genesect, Mega Charizard X and Y, Heatran, Dragonite, Mega Gengar, Aegislash, Kyurem-B, and Meloetta. Mega Tyranitar can also be used against some special attackers like Magnezone and Greninja because Mega Tyranitar is able to tank a Corkscrew Crash from Magnezone as well as a Choice Specs Hydro Cannon from Greninja. Try to avoiding bringing it against Fighting- and Ground-type Pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Mega Blaziken, Mega Heracross, Landorus-T and Garchomp, since Mega Tyranitar has nothing in its moveset to KO both these types, and it also gets defeated easily. Try to avoid sending Mega Tyranitar against Tapu Lele because it usually uses Z-Reflect on the first turn and 3HKOes Mega Tyranitar with Moonblast while Mega Tyranitar cannot 3HKO Tapu Lele in return through Reflect even with Sandstorm damage. Also, don't bring it against bulky Water-type Pokemon like Primarina, Tapu Fini, and Mega Blastoise because these Pokemon are bulky enough to tank a couple of attacks from Mega Tyranitar even after Sandstorm damage, and can KO back with their own attacks.

Team Options[edit | edit source]

Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to Ground-type attacks from Pokemon like Garchomp and Landorus-T and Pokemon with Sturdy like Donphan and Golem, bulky Pokemon like Mega Heracross or fast Pokemon like Kyurem-B can be used to counter said threats. In this context, fast Mega Heracross can be used as well. These Pokemon can take advantage of Mega Tyranitar's ability to KO its common counters like Tapu Koko and bulky Mega Charizard Y. Since Fighting-type Pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Heracross can KO Mega Tyranitar easily, Fairy-type checks like Magearna and Primarina can be used. Here, bulky Primarina finds better usage because it can additionally be used to KO Sturdy users and in turn, lure Magnezone for Mega Tyranitar to defeat. Since Mega Tyranitar is vulnerable to stall Pokemon like Mega Venusaur, Mega Sableye, Mega Aggron, and Pyukumuku, stallbreakers like Tapu Koko, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Gardevoir can be used. Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to bulky Water- and Grass-type Pokemon like Primarina, Mega Swampert, and Tapu Fini, bulky Grass-type Pokemon like Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn can be used.

Moves[edit | edit source]

Either Taunt or Dragon Dance can be used on this set. While Taunt helps in shutting down stall Pokemon like Mega Venusaur, Dragon Dance can be used to set up against Pokemon like Dragonite while Sand Stream breaks Multiscale with subsequent attacks from Mega Tyranitar defeating them. Iron Head can be used to have a better chance against Fairy-types like Tapu Lele and Mimikyu. Iron Head also has a chance of flinching, which could help it win against match-ups like Golem where it can cause Golem to flinch on the first turn and follow up with Earthquake to KO Golem. Rock Tomb is used to KO Ice- and Fire-type Pokemon like Kyurem-B and Mega Charizard . It can also be used to reduce the Speed stat of faster Pokemon like Mimikyu. Earthquakeallows Mega Tyranitar to hit Steel-type Pokemon like Magearna as well as Electric-types such as Tapu Koko

Set Details[edit | edit source]

252 HP and 72 Defense EVs help it tank a couple of Outrages from Kyurem-B and a Let's Snuggle Forever from Adamant maximum Attack Mimikyu. The 144 EVs in Speed are invested to outspeed Jolly maximum speed Mimikyu after a Rock Tomb drop, because it is needed against Curse Mimikyu. The remaining 44 Attack EVs coupled with an Adamant nature allow Mega Tyranitar to KO its intended targets like Kyurem-B, Mega Charizard X and Y, and most importantly, Mimikyu. The Special Defense boost due to Sand Stream helps Mega Tyranitar tank a Timid Choice Specs Hydro Cannon from Greninja.

Usage Tips[edit | edit source]

Since Mega Tyranitar is a Rock- and Dark-type Pokemon, it is advisable to send it against Bug-, Fire-, Flying-, Ghost-, Ice-, and Psychic-type Pokemon like Genesect, Mega Charizard X and Y, Dragonite, Mimikyu, Aegislash, Kyurem-B, and Meloetta. Mega Tyranitar can also be used against some special attackers like Magnezone and Greninja because Mega Tyranitar is able to tank a Corkscrew Crash from Magnezone as well as a Choice Specs Hydro Cannon from Timid Greninja. Try to avoid bringing it against Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Mega Lopunny, Mega Heracross, Landorus-T and Garchomp, since Mega Tyranitar has nothing in its moveset to KO both the types and is also defeated easily by them. Also, don't bring it against bulky Water-type Pokemon like Primarina, Tapu Fini and Mega Blastoise because these Pokemon are bulky enough to tank a couple of attacks from Mega Tyranitar even after Sandstorm damage and can KO back with their own attacks.

Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to Ground-type moves from Pokemon like Garchomp and Landorus-T and Pokemon with Sturdy like Donphan and Golem, bulky Pokemon like Mega Heracross or fast Pokemon like Kyurem-B can be used to counter these threats. In this context, fast Mega Heracross can be used as well. These Pokemon can take advantage of Mega Tyranitar's ability to KO its commonly used counters like Tapu Koko and bulky Mega Charizard Y. Since Fighting-type Pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Heracross can KO Mega Tyranitar easily, Fairy-types like Magearna and Primarina can be used. Here, bulky Primarina finds better usage because it can additionally be used to KO Sturdy users and, in turn, lure Magnezone for Mega Tyranitar to KO. Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to Water-, Grass-, and Fairy-type attacks from Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Mega Vensaur, and Tapu Fini, Mega Venusaur can be used to counter these weaknesses. Mega Tyranitar can also be cover Mega Venusaur's Flying- and Psychic-type weaknesses except Tapu Lele. Since Mega Tyranitar is not able to KO physically defensive stall Pokemon like Mega Venusaur, Mega Sableye, Mega Aggron, and Pyukumuku, which are capable of KOing Mega Tyranitar, stallbreakers like Tapu Koko, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Gardevoir can be used. Since Mega Tyranitar can be used against most Fire-type Pokemon, Pokemon that are weak to Fire like Magearna and Jirachi can be used as teammates.

Strategy Comments[edit | edit source]

Other Options[edit | edit source]

A fully defensive set with Counter or Foul Play can be used against Pokemon like Garchomp and Mega Gyarados, but this can be countered by setup from the mentioned Pokemon. As a soft check to Ground-type Pokemon, Avalanche with enough defensive investment to survive a STAB Earthquake from Landorus-T can be used, but again this is susceptible to setup, which can't be countered using Mega Tyranitar.

Checks and Counters[edit | edit source]

  • Fighting-types: Fighting-type Pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Heracross counter Mega Tyranitar because Mega Tyranitar is 4x weak to Fighting.
  • Grass-types : Most Grass-type Pokemon are either bulky enough to tank Mega Tyranitar's attacks, like Mega Venusaur, while some others are faster than Mega Tyranitar, like Kartana.
  • Water-types: While Mega Tyranitar is able to check Mega Gyarados, many other commonly used Water-type Pokemon like Primarina and Tapu Fini are able to KO Mega Tyranitar without being KOed by it because of their good defenses.
  • Steel-types: Steel-type Pokemon like Mega Mawile and Mega Metagross are able to KO Mega Tyranitar with their strong STAB moves.
  • Stall: Mega Tyranitar is vulnerable to physically defensive stall Pokemon like Mega Venusaur, Mega Sableye, Mega Aggron, and Pyukumuku, which are able to survive Tyranitar’s attacks and PP stall or defeat it with Leech Seed or Toxic.
